Calgary Flames rage four fifth consecutive victory 4-1 against Phoenix Coyotes -NHL Update
Calgary is trying hard with the Flames getting extremely hot with their fifth straight victory on route to securing a playoff spot as they burnt the Phoenix Coyotes, 4-1, Thursday night, March 15, 2012, at the sold-out Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta,
Canada.
The crowd of over 19,000 could not stay in their seats and did not want to either as the Flames continue to fire off goal after goal, treating Phoenix like a bunch of amateurs playing in the major league.
Sven Baertschi raised the Calgary momentum with his opening goal at only 17 seconds into the matchup, giving the Flames a reason to continue playing hard.
With the tensions rising, Paul Bissonnette and Guillaume Desbiens of Calgary exchanged fists with less than six minutes remaining. Both were given a five-minute major penalty for fighting.
"We got a great start, a huge goal there by Baertschi," said captain, Jarome Iginla, who is also fully contributing to Calgary’s playoff run. "That was sure nice to see that first one. Nice hands."
The captain has six consecutive goals in the past six matchups, which has been something that gets Calgary’s motor going all of a sudden.
"We've been through different stretches this year as a team and we've been able to battle different things," Iginla said. "We've competed hard and different times where we could've had reasons to feel sorry for ourselves or quit we just kept going and now
we're going to keep doing that. It's fun to be back in this playoff race. It's going to be interesting with so many teams here."
Iginla scored his 31st of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season while Phoenix Coyotes got their only goal of the match through Oliver Ekman-Larsson with less than three minutes remaining.
Matt Stajan capped off the second period nearly a minute later with his sixth of the year followed by Alex Tanguay while his team was shorthanded in the third.
Calgary is a game away from overtake the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference and will be heading into their next matchup against Edmonton Oilers with that on mind on Friday.
Phoenix has the next against Edmonton as well, but on Sunday.
