Calgary Flames rally in the third period to beat the Colorado Avalanche
The Calgary Flames, down 2-1 in the third period, came from behind to snatch a 4-2 win against the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday, 9 November.
How it happened
The first two periods of this matchup were riddled with penalties with 38 minutes being assessed. Of those, 14 separate minor penalties were called. The first three goals of the game all came on the power
play.
The avalanche opened the scoring in the first period through Brandon Yip who tallied his fourth of the season. Thirty-six seconds into the second period and Curtis Glencross tied things up for Calgary
with his fourth of the year. After a series of roughing penalties were assessed at the end of the second period, the Avalanche got a goal early in the third frame through Chris Stewart, who has been on fire to start the season scoring his tenth.
Facing a 2-1 deficit the Flames turned on the after burners and got goals from Mikael Backlund and David Moss to put the Flames in the lead before Glencross got his second of the game by firing the puck
into an empty net.
What they're saying
The Avalanche has been riddled with injuries early on this season and they were dealt a further blow when they lost both T.J. Galiardi and David Van Der Gulik to injuries in the second period.
"They are starting to pile up," Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said about the injuries his team have faced. "We're facing some adversity right now, but I thought we played pretty well. We certainly had chances
to win the hockey game. We just couldn't hang on.
"We have a number of injuries, but we don't feel sorry for ourselves. No one feels sorry for you in this League. We feel like we can compete with anybody. It doesn't matter who is in the lineup."
Miikka Kiprusoff, in goal for the Flames, was happy to end his personal three-game losing streak.
"It's pretty nice to get the win. They took that lead in the third period and it's a nice comeback for us. We took a few too many penalties, but we pushed back and got those two points."
The Flames did themselves a huge favor by getting an important win against a divisional opponent to help them keep pace in the Northwest Division. They get set to play the Coyotes in Phoenix on Friday,
12 November.
The Avalanche, after four straight home games, now head on the road to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets Friday.
