Calgary Flames re-signs veteran forward Brendan Morrison to one-year, $1.25 million deal –NHL Update
After keeping Brendan Morrison on the free agents list for quite a while now, Calgary Flames re-signed their veteran centre player back onto the team with a one-year contract worth an estimated $1.25 million, on Friday, July 15.
Calgary Flames' general manager, Jay Feaster, was especially happy at the occasion.
"We are a better and deeper team with Brendan back in the fold", Jay Feaster said.
The native of Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada, has played nearly 14 seasons in the NHL and his last was his first with Calgary, which has become accustomed to his position.
The 35-year-old veteran, was drafted as the 39th overall pick during round-two of the 1993 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft by New Jersey Devils, but did not start playing with them until the 1997-1998 season began.
Morrison played three seasons with New Jersey until being traded to Vancouver Canucks during the 1999-2000 timeframe, and remained with them until in 2008 when he joined Anaheim Ducks following another shift to Dallas Stars, Washington Capitals and finally
landing in Calgary.
Last season, Morrison picked up 43 points with 9 goals and 34 assists in 66 games which had him ending his regular season early in March due to a knee related injury.
Despite his early end, Morrison remained as one of the teams’ highest scorers, while Calgary's plans on using him for that purpose along with guiding some new faces on the team.
Even though the deal took time to initiate, Morrison is excited to be returning back to Calgary for another season.
“Yeah … a busy weekend, to say the least”, Morrison said from his off-season home in Tofino. “When we talked at the end of the year, they expressed to me they were interested in bringing me back for the next season. They didn’t give me a time-frame or anything,
and I knew there were other issues to deal with, but it was always on the landscape”.
In regards to his injury, Morrison has been cleared to play for quite a while now, but has not played since. Joining their training camp in September will give a better picture on his health and ability to perform.
