Calgary Flames sign Veteran Defenseman Scott Hannan to one-year, $1 million contract –NHL News Update
Termed as a move to replace their veteran defenseman , Robyn Regehr, a player Calgary Flames traded earlier this National Hockey League (NHL) offseason to Buffalo Sabres in order to free up salary cap space, the Western Conference franchise signed on free
agent, Scott Hannan, to a one-year contract, worth a reported $1 million.
Calgary Flames general manager, Jay Feaster, made the announcement on Saturday.
"Scott not only brings a wealth of experience to our blue-line, but he also brings a great deal of knowledge about the Western Conference in general and our Division in particular", said Feaster. "Just as importantly, he has demonstrated his commitment to
our organization and his desire to be a part of our team by agreeing to a contract that enables us to fit him under the salary cap".
Calgary Flames now has seven defenseman who are signed on with one-way contracts and do not termed the situation as one which would require giving all a shot on the ice, but rather regard them as a backup for any unseen circumstances, like injuries.
Most players being young and future prospects, signing Hannan will provide a more veteran presence for the team and its growing players.
We have young guys we think can step up and make the team and have some depth guys who can play, but we wanted a veteran presence”, added Feaster.
Scott Hannan, a 32-year-old defenseman from Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, was drafted by San Jose Sharks as their 23rd overall pick, during round-one of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.
Hannan has now played 12 seasons in the major league with various team like San Jose, Colorado Avalanche and Washington Capitals for a total of 830 games played and 185 points (31 goals, 154 assists) registered.
Along with over a decade of playing in the NHL, Hannan also brings along with him valuable playoff experience of 82 games for 15 points (1 goal, 14 assists).
Scott Hannan might have remained a free agent as teams around the NHL lost confidence in the defenseman, but according to Calgary, he is everything they have been looking for.
