Calgary Flames sign hot Czech forward Roman Cervenka -NHL Update
Calgary Flames have finally begun their offseason team rebuilding by signing hot Czech forward player, Roman Cervenka, to a one-year deal on Wednesday, May 2, 2012.
Seeing how Calgary can use all the firepower they can get, signing Cervenka is seen to be a welcomed move by not only the management but also the fans that have yearned to see their team make the playoffs, at which the Flames failed to do for the past two
National Hockey League (NHL) regular seasons now.
"Roman is a highly skilled player with great hands, excellent vision and the ability to score goals at an elite level of play," said Flames general manager, Jay Feaster.
Flames have decided to pay the young player according to his performance as his salary cap hit is reported to be a cool US $3.775 million. The contract consists of a base salary of $832,500, a signing bonus of $92,500 alongside the major portion in the form
of potential performance bonuses of $2.85 million.
The one-year contract will be his entry-level contract, giving him a boost if Flames decide to keep him past that or if other teams pursue the player instead.
“He’s a guy that’s been pursued for a number of years by NHL teams and he has waited. He’s thought about it. This isn’t a snap decision. He’s a very cautious guy. He does a lot of research. He has talked to a lot of players from the Czech Republic who are,
or have, played in the league. That’s the biggest thing. He has done the work on his end to be certain he’s ready to come over,” Feaster added.
Roman Cervenka has been playing for the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) up until now and had been in view of many NHL teams over the past two seasons in which he scored 54 goals in 105 games played with Omsk.
The 26-year-old also has experience playing with Jaromir Jagr, with whom he was on the first line during his first season with Omsk.
It will definitely be interesting to see how Calgary Flames improve with Roman Cervenka on board now as the team continues to improve itself for the upcoming regular season.
