Calgary Flames' top line forming in camp
They say that a little extra work can go a long way, and Olli Jokinen and Alex Tanguay seem to echo that statement perfectly.
The Calgary Flames’ two big offseason acquisitions will be skating with team captain Jarome Iginla at training camp, and are looking to create some early chemistry with Iginla.
During an intra-squad game on Monday, Jokinen and Tanguay played on a line with Iginla, and wasted no time at all to light the lamp. Both players scored a goal and added an assist as the
red team beat the white team 3-1 at the Max Bell Arena.
“It was a good start,” Jokinen said. “You want to build that chemistry. It's been working pretty good early on. It's going to be better tomorrow.”
Tanguay also had good things to say about the line and its ability to produce some much-needed offence.
“We're just trying to build a little chemistry and find the things that will make us successful,” said Tanguay.
Last season was a disappointing one for the 6ft 1in native of St. Justine, Quebec. He played with the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he scored 10 goals and 27 assists for 37 points in 80 games,
a career low. Prior to the 2009-10 season, Tanguay was a member of the Montreal Canadiens, scoring 41 points (16G, 25A) in 50 games. His season was shortened by a shoulder injury which he suffered on 30 December 2008.
Jokinen split last season between the Calgary Flames and the New York Rangers. He began the season in Calgary, but was traded to the Rangers on 1 Februrary 2010 for forwards Chris Higgins
and Ales Kotalik. He scored a total of 50 points (15G, 35A) in 82 games last season, and was later brought back by the Flames shortly after he became an unrestricted free agent.
Iginla is coming off of a 69-point (32G, 37A), 82-game season with the Flames, who failed to qualify for the playoffs last year. The team is looking to rebound this year, and with a potential
first line containing three marquee players, the post-season may be within reach.
