Calgary Flames wins 5-4 against Edmonton Oilers after a shootout
The final game of Saturday was played at the Rexall Place as Calgary Flames played away against Edmonton Oilers and won the game 5-4 after a shootout.
Oilers is out of the play-off picture and was playing the role of a spoiler while Flames is in the ninth position in the Western Conference and with a win could move into the play-off cut.
The game started off with Oilers being the dominating force in the first period and scoring the lone goal of the period to lead 1-0 at the end.
The second 20 minutes of play kicked off with Flames levelling the scores but Oilers responded quickly to get back into the lead with two goals.
The stage was set for Oilers' win as it scored the opening goal in the final period. Flames showed its strong offence and scored three goals before the period ended to level the scored on 4-4.
The game went into overtime but no goals were scored but Flames emerged as 5-4 winners of the game after the shootout.
Teemu Hartikainen, center of Oilers, was the star of the game as he scored a brilliant goal in the second period.
Flames got off to a flying start to the game which saw it making a few shots on goal early on that could have very easily gone to the back of the net.
Flames was without a doubt the stronger of the two teams on paper but the Oilers matched them during the period.
In fact it dominated the game on quite a few occasions that saw it scoring in the 16th minute to get into the lead.
The goal was scored by Magnus Paajarvi from a decent strike. Both teams had a weak defence which saw quite a few scoring chances for both teams but no goals were scored in the remaining part of the period as the Oilers led by a single goal as the teams went
into the break.
The second saw the Flames scoring in the 9th minute to level the scores through Captain Jarome Iginla.
However, the Oilers showed their strong offence with a goal in the very next minute through Teemu Hartikainen that put them back into the lead.
The Oilers scored once again in the final minute to double their advantage with the goal scored by Colin Fraser from a quick fired shot. The period ended with the Oilers leading 3-1 as they made 7 shots on goal during the period while the Flames made 11
shots on goal.
Oilers put themselves in a comfortable position with a goal in the fourth minute of the final period scored by Ryan Jones.
Unfortunately for them the Flames managed to crawl their way back into the game with a goal in the sixth minute through Captain Iginla, then Curtis Glencross scoring in the 13th minute.
Flames successfully levelled the scores with a goal scored by Steve Staios from a powerful strike in the 19th minute.
The period ended with the scores level on 4-4 and the game went into overtime where there were no goals but after shootout it was the Flames who emerged as 5-4 winners of the game.
