Calhoun positive on Gal About Town’s win in the Golden Rod Stakes
Iroquois Racing Club’s 2-year-old filly, Gal About Town, experienced her first defeat in three career starts by the hands of Sign in the Grade 2 Pocahontas Stakes over a mile at Churchill Downs on 28 October, 2012, but trainer Bret Calhoun is confident that
his filly will bounce back in the Grade 2 Golden Rod Stakes at the Louisville oval on 24 November, 2012.
Gal About Town will be going 1 1/16 miles for the first time in her career when she runs in the Golden Rod Stakes, and the graded stakes race being the “Road to the Kentucky Oaks” prep season race, the connections will be looking to win the race and get
a head start in regards to the new qualifying system for the Kentucky Oaks.
The first four finishers of the Grade 1 Golden Rod Stakes will earn 10-4-2-1 points, respectively.
"We were enticed by the $500,000 in the Delta Princess (on Nov. 17), but I felt like in the long run this was the best path," Calhoun said. "So we waited, and went for the less money and are going to run her out of her own stall. I think in the long run,
it'll be beneficial for her looking forward to her maybe turning out to be an Oaks filly."
In the Grade 2 Pocahontas Stakes, Gal About Town finished four lengths back of Sign, who covered the 1 mile distance in 1 minute and 38.63 seconds, as Cloudy Vow finished third on the day.
Prior to the Pocahontas Stakes, Gal About Town was undefeated in two starts, breaking her maiden at first asking going 5 ½ furlongs at Monmouth Park on 2 September, 2012.
The juvenile filly by Cit Zip, stretched out in distance to 6 furlongs, and won an allowance race over Keeneland’s synthetic surface on 6 October, 2012. She defeated Brotherhood Singer in second and Noun in third, with the winning time of 1 minute and 10.90
seconds.
Calhoun believes that Gal About Town’s performance in the Pocahontas Stakes really gave him confidence that the filly can go two-turns, and with distance, you only find out when you run it.
