  1. Give him a few days to get used to his new surroundings. Be sure he has at least one good place to hide. Even though you just got him and I'm sure you want to hold him a lot, give him a few days to settle in. If you really just HAVE to hold him, limit it to 10 minutes once a day until he eats for the first time.

When you buy pinkies, you can ask for day-old pinkies (or the smallest they have available). Then give him 2-3 days to digest his food, and after that he can be held gently daily ... until his eyes cloud over, showing he's about to shed. Give him a break at that time until after he sheds.

Holding him for a few minutes once or twice a day is fine and will help him get used to being held. Once he is used to it, even after you've had him for 5 or 6 years, keep handling him at least once a week to keep him used to it.

You sound like you researched the snake before you bought it, so a lot of this information is for others who are just looking into getting a pet snake.

Good luck to you and your snake! They can live for many years and can be good companions.

  2. if you are unsure, go with a pinky. my cali king just breached 2 feet and he is still on fuzzies. but you could wait a week before you feed your snake. let it get use to its new home. then feed it. cali king snakes eat. they love it. after a week, that sucker will be hungry and will chow down. enjoy your snake.
