I see this coyote everynight at 10:30 on the dot.(which is night time here) I've been wanting to shoot it, But the thing that there are house close by. i'm afraid of the ricochet, what i'm afraid of is the shot(meaning sound of the gun). It gets dark around here about 9:00.

All i have to shoot this yote is a 30-06, 3 shotguns(one of those being a slug gun), 30-30, 45acp 44mag, 22LR, and a bow.

I think that the 30cals and the 12ga's are gona be to loud and that the 22 isnt gona have enough punch on it.

any segestions??

  1. If you shoot at nite use shotgun with # 1 0r #2 buckshot ,your neighbors will here any of the guns any way.

  2. Use the 30-30 and your shot gun and get one of those wounded rabbit decoys. Hunting at night with a rifle is not a good idea, do it in the late afternoon to just before dark

  3. If it's legal to shoot where you're at (ie not in city limits) use whichever you're most comfortable shooting him with regardless of noise. If it's a one time deal then i doubt your neighbors will mind. If it's legal and you're on your own property and they do get nasty about it...who cares they can't do anything about it.

  4. Regardless of what you shoot, the neighbors probably are going to hear it. So if you live in an area where discharging firearms is illegal (like in most cities) you should probably try trapping the coyote instead of shooting it.

If you live in an area where you can shoot it and you can get close enough (under 75 yards) and can get a clean hit in the heart/lung area or the head, the .22 LR with CCI Stingers should get the job. The .30-30 will work well (in fact it will probably kill quicker than the .22LR), but with typical loadings (150-180 grain slugs) there's a good possibility/chance its likely to over-penetrate so make sure there's nothing behind the coyote that will be hit if that happens. Regardless of the gun, make sure there's nothing that will be hit if you miss because rifle bullets can travel for considerable distances.

Since it seems like you're worried about missing and having the bullet hit something, I'd recommend you go with one of the shotguns firing buckshot or BB shot. That should have enough power and shouldn't travel too far. Maybe this article will give you some ideas.

  5. Do not attempt to shoot it with the 22LR.* You will most likely just end up wounding it.* Bad Idea.* Go Big or don't go at all.*

  6. Well, unless the coyote is a direct threat (like attacking a child or family pet) you really need to check and see if you're not going to be in violation of any City or County ordinance by discharging a firearm there.  You are right to be concerned with endangering others and coyotes are not usually the villains some people make them out to be.  Unless they are rabid they will leave you alone so long as you leave them alone.

Coyotes can become pesky upsetting trash cans but then so can the neighbor's dog.  If you feel the coyote really is a threat, then notify your local authorities.  This way you won't get complained on for discharging a firearm and maybe even 'reckless endangerment.'

    Good luck.

  7. A .22 is perfect if you dont want it to be messy. Shoot it in the stomach then it will run off somewhere and die. They cant survive a stomach wound for very long.

  8. 22-250 is a great gun for coyote hunting

  9. Use the 30-30. Your neighbors shouldn't mind if you killed a coyote.

  10. .22 LR should be OK but just make sure you use CCI ammunition (flat shooting round for .22 LR). Also make sure you try and hit vitals because a coyotes kill zone is about the size of a tennisball (back edge of the front shoulder-blade. If ur looking to shoot it after dark get a red spotlight to spot it with otherwise you would be a very iresponsible outdoorsman and the last thing that the rest of us avid hunters and outdoormen, need is another irresponsible hunter to give anti-gun activists a reason to b****.

  11. Heres what i did.... get some fireworks....  When mister coyote shows up shoot him with whatever rifle of shotgun you want.... Of course the neighbors will be startled.  then immediately set off the fireworks. they will go right back to sleep or curse "who's the idiot with the fireworks".....

  12. If you are absolutely certain that you have a clear shot (exit wound included), take it with your 30-30.  Apologize to the neighbors after-wards for the noise.  I'm sure that they will forgive you since you removed a pest, that also happens to be a pet predator, from the area.  Put the round right through the heart and lungs.  It will go down quick.  You might even talk to your neighbors before hand and discuss your intentions and concerns.  See where they stand on the issue.  Good luck!

  13. Of the calibers you have, I would use the 30-30. You've got really loud guns. If you were skilled enough to hit him with a kill shot from your bow, by all means it is the quietest obviously, but a very hard shot, pistols too(inaccurate). The 30-30 is loud too, but quieter than and more accurate than the rest. I would suggest getting a nice .223, or even a .22 win mag., the velocity and tumble effect would put that coyote to rest no problem.

  14. 12 gaug or a slug gun or a 30-6 all of these guns will kill it but bring a .45 just in case

dont worrrie about the noise if they complaine tell them you were protecting your livestock

  15. Out of the calibers you listed, i would use the 30-30.  I have shot one with a 30.06 at a closer distance (60 yards), it was a bit of overkill.  Ideally, I would get a .223 to use in this situation.
