Calico Cat will try his luck in the two-mile John Smith's Northumberland Plate
The Alastair Lidderdale trained, Calico Cat, delivered an impressive performance in the Stowe Family Law LLP Grand Cup at York on 26th May, 2012, where he was paired with Mickael Barzalona, and finished two lengths after the
winner, Cavalryman.
After this victory, the son of Tiger Hill, out of mare Gossamer, is aiming for bigger opportunities as he might compete in the John Smith's Northumberland Plate, which is scheduled to take place on 30th June, 2012 at Newcastle,
to be run over a distance of two miles.
Regarding this, the trainer stated:
"We've been contemplating going for the Northumberland Plate. He's been given a mark of 108 now and plans are fluid. He's had three quick runs so we'll see how he goes on over the next few weeks before we make any final plans.”
The four-year-old runner has truly excelled in his previous three starts and has stirred a significant amount of attention.
The Chris Beek Racing owned runner started his career with a placed position, as he finished third to the evening’s favourite, Memphis Tennessee, in the Group 3 Boodles Diamond Ormonde Stakes at Chester on 11th May, 2012.
The young runner went a step further and triumphed in the Thirsk Racecourse Conference Rooms Maiden Stakes at Thirsk on 19th May, 2012, which he entered with a 3-1 chance, and narrowly defeated race favourite, Hallmark Star,
by ¾ of a length.
The bay gelding seems to have a bright future and trainer Lidderdale is immensely pleased with the way he has been performing.
His victory at Thirsk was at about 1 mile and 4 furlongs and after extended workout sessions, he might compete in the two-mile race.
The trainer stated that this run was bought cheaply and was a bargain, but with his talent, he has proved to be more than his worth and is likely to be one of the new and emerging runners.
Commenting on this bargain buy, the trainer said:
"He's got a lovely pedigree, but we bought him very cheaply. We hoped he'd be OK, but he has surprised us for him to do as well as he has.”
