Question:

California EDD Unemployment insurance Extension?

I just heard President Bush signed a bill this morning to extend unemployment benefits for the nation by an additional 13 weeks and 13 more in states with very high unemployment like here in California (6.2%).

I have a friend who's first 26 weeks of benefits were exhausted. Does anyone know how the process works to get the "Federal Extension" with EDD? Do you have to ask for it or is it automatic? Thank you.

  1. Sorry dude...as far as I know it hasn't happened yet.  What's happened is the house ways and means committee has created a bill to extend unemployment.  They want to tack it onto a big bill regarding troop spending and Bush is vowing to veto it if they do.  (a*****e!)  So, they may just include it as part of another bill.  They are busy preparing a second economic stimulus package and may include it as part of their package.  They haven't decided yet...but they are definitely going forward with it.  The Republicans are being very tough about it and saying that they will not vote to approve this, but I speculate that this is bluff....that evenutally it will get passed sometime soon.  We will probably know more next tuesday.  Hope this helps

Oh....and as for California....The Guv, Arnold is lobbying to get this passed.  There is an an article about it wondering why it took him so long to figure out what was going on.  Hopefully, this means that there will be other repubs that feel the same way.
