Question:

California Fan Palm - at 15', why does it hav roots growing out, all around the bottom foot of it's trunk?

Is it pushing itself up out of the heavy clay ground, with its lower roots?

Is it designed to grow in an area where leaves or sand usually build up around its base?

If not either of those, what is the reason for this root growth above ground? The ground around it has not washed or blown away...

Thank you for all responsible, helpful input! (:

  1. These are fairly common in Costa Rica and tropical rainforests.  The main function of them is additional support so the palm can grow taller and support a larger crown.
