California: Need to add myself to an existing title on a Vehicle that is free and clear (so that there are 2 names on the title). How can I do this? What form number is (Form xxxx)? The DMV website has a lot of information, but I can't find the proper location.

THANK YOU!

Thank you very much!

  1. "SiziQu" is correct.  She is especially correct about the "and" or "or" decision.

If you title the vehicle as "and"  (Joe and Bob) that means you both must sign the title to dispose of the vehicle, however if it is titled "or" (Joe or Bob) that means that either of you can dispose of the vehicle without the other party's permission.

In the case of spouses the title is often titled as "or" so that in the event of the death of one spouse the title instantly transfers to the other without the need go through probate.

  2. You and the owner go to DMV with the title. The owner signs off the front of the title. You and the owner fill in the back of the title and sign. You need to decide if you want it as 'and' or an 'or'. Dmv will take the title and a new one will be sent to whatever address is listed.
