Whats the deal with the age for riding? They told me at the time of purchase any age can ride, as long as with an adult. To drive alone, you have to be over 16 years old.

  1. California state law restricts anyone under 16 years of age to operate any  motorized vessel ( such as your jet ski ) with more than 15 horsepower with a few exceptions.  Persons 12 to 15 years old can operate a motorized vessel over 15 horsepower as long as someone at least 18 years old is on board supervising them:  http://www.boatus.com/onlinecourse/state...

  2. You don't need to be licensed to operate a boat in california, regardless of age.  Yes, a life jacket is required at all times while on a jet ski. A passenger can be any age if all they do is go along for a ride, but to legally operate a jet ski you must be 16 years old, or if there is someone who is at least 18 years old to supervise, you can be as young as 12, again, that is if they are operating the ski. To just be a passenger ther is no age restrictions of any sort in California.  Go to a Coast Guard "MSO" office and ask for a booklet called "ABC's of California Boating Laws" which will tell you a bunch of laws as it pertains to you and your jet ski.  You can also call your local Habor Police or Lifeguard offices, they also enforce boating laws, and can tell you the same.  They may also have the booklet as well.
