California Taxpayer ID?

I have opened a small agency using my last name as the business name. Do I need a taxpayer ID when I submit invoices to bill insurance companies? I have a few subcontractors and that's about it.

  1. http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/arti...

  2. If they (the insurance agencies) send you a W-9 (request for ID number), you have to give them your SSN or an EIN, but it's between you and them what information they may request of you, legal to request, or not.

You don't _need_ a taxpayer ID to submit invoices.  The insurance companies may request one, and, if they do so formally on a W-9, you must respond, or they have the option to withhold 25% to pay the IRS, and possibly an amount for your state taxes.

  3. You can use you SS# if you have no employees.  However, it would be better to get a tax ID # especially if you have sub contractors.  Otherwise you will be giving out your Social to everyone.  File form SS4.
