Question:

California Voting Question?

I'm a California resident who will be attending college in Massachusetts this fall, and am eligible to vote for the first time in the coming general election. I'm wondering if I'm supposed to register as a voter in California and vote absentee, or register as a voter in Massachusetts. In other words, my question is, if I'm a college student, is my permanent residence still in the state I live in, or the state I'll be going to college in?

  1. If you're going to keep your California Drivers License I'd say register for your absentee ballot. If you're going to become a resident of Ma then register there. I had a friend from Hawaii going to school in Gunnison Colorado, he stayed registered to vote in Hawaii.

I second the thanks from the guy above me, I don't care who you vote for but thank you for participating in the election process.

  2. There is a minimum residency requirement to vote.  I'm not sure what it is but I think it's six months.  It might be different for each state!

In any case I think you'd be best voting absentee in California at least the first year.  After that I believe you may declare your 'permanent residence' in either state, but not both.

When I went to college in California, if you were from out of state you paid much higher fees.  But only for the first year, then you had lived in California for a year and you were a 'resident'.  I think voting works the same way.

(BTW, thank you for voting!  I don't care who you vote for, the more people who vote, the better things will go in the long run.)
