Question:

California driving test curbs without stop signs?

I am going to take my Ca behind the wheel test for the second time next week due to a critical error. and i wanted to know if curbs without a stop sign are a stop or yield. I am from GA where every curb means stop even if theres no cross walk or sign. However, it seems CA is MUCH different.

  1. u should stop before the curb than inch slowly up

  2. You need not stop unless there is other traffic (or, obviously, pedestrians) there.

(For safety's sake, I would recommend always stopping, however.)

  3. OMG,

The others who answered this question are all wrong!!!

A curb has nothing to do with a requirement to stop, that's what a stop sign is for.

From reading your question, it appears that you probably failed because you didn't slow down and check for traffic at an uncontrolled-blind intersection which is a critical error on a California DMV drive test.

An uncontrolled intersection is an intersection that does NOT have any stop or yield signs in ANY direction.

A blind intersection is an intersection where you can't see if any cross traffic is approaching the intersection when you're 100 feet from the intersection.

An uncontrolled-blind intersection is dangerous because:

    a)  nobody is required to stop

    b)  drivers usually assume that the cross traffic has a stop or yield sign and blasts through the intersection at 25 MPH +.

When two drivers do this at the same time, you have an accident.

If you stop at these intersections, you will probably fail for an unnecessary stop.

If you blast through through the intersection at 25 MPH, you will fail.

You must slow down to 15 MPH and check left, right, and left again.  If no vehicles are approaching, just continue through the intersection without stopping or you will probably fail.

The cross traffic usually believes that you have a stop sign and will blast through the intersection at 25MPH so if you don't want to get hit at an uncontrolled-blind intersection, slow down to 15MPH (or a little less), look left & right, and then proceed through.  The only time you can fully stop is for a pedestrian or to yield to another vehicle who got there first.

    I hope this helps....

  4. If you come are on a side street and come to a "main" street and there is no traffic sign present, treat as a STOP sign...Come to a complete stop, make sure that cross traffic and pedestrians have cleared, then proceed...Ease out slowly if you do not have adequate view of oncoming traffic.

    Welcome to CA.

    All the best.
