California on top of table after day two of the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship
California took over the top spot holder, Georgia, from the overall points ranking table after day two of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship, held at University of Texas, in Austin. California
excelled to the top of the table with 295 points followed by Georgia at 274.5, Southern Cal 253, Stanford 192 and Arizona with 184 points.
Defending champions, Florida Gators, moved to the seventh spot on day two in contrast to their tenth position after the conclusion on day one of the championship.
The event started with the 200-yard medley relay, where the teams of Cal Berkeley, Wisconsin, Southern Cali, Auburn and Texas A&M put up a great show in front of the packed crowd. Cal Berkeley won the title for the race in a time of 1:35.03 minutes ahead
of Wisconsin and Southern Cali, who finished the race in the second and third positions in a time of 1:35.71 and 1:36.06 minutes, respectively. The teams of Auburn and Texas finished fourth and fifth in 1:36.62 and 1:36.81 minutes, respectively.
The next event was the 400-yard Individual Medley, which was conquered by Southern Cali’s junior Katinka Hosszu, who previously won the 200-yard IM event. Hosszu won the 400-yard event in a time of 3:59.75 minutes ahead of Florida’s Elizabeth Beisel and
Stanford’s Mara Dirado, who touched the wall in 4:00.87 and 4:01.02 minutes, respectively.
In the 100-yard butterfly event, Cal Berkeley’s Amanda Sims produced a wonderful swim and showed the crowd why she deserved to be victorious in the meet. Sims touched the wall in a time of 50.49 seconds and was followed by Western’s Claire Donahue and Southern
Cali’s Lyndsay De Paul, who touched the finishing wall in a time of 51.68 and 51.74 seconds, respectively.
The fourth event was the 200-yard freestyle, where two Georgian swimmers dominated the category by occupying a spot on the podium. Allison Schmitt of Georgia won the title in a time of 1:42.08 minutes, ahead of Virginia’s Lauren Perdue and her team-mate,
Morgan Scroggy, in a time of 1:42.51 and 1:42.56 minutes, respectively.
The event was followed by the 100-yard breast-stroke, where Jillian Tyler of Minnesota finished first in 58.39 seconds and was followed by Texas A&M’s Breeja Larson and George Mason’s Ashley Danner, who stood on the podium with timings of 58.51 and 59.23
seconds, respectively.
The last event was the 100-yard back-stroke, where Cindy Tran of Cal Berkeley conquered the event in 51.30 seconds, ahead of her-team mate, Deborah Roth and Southern Cali’s Presley Bard, who ended the meet in a timing of 51.51 and 51.62 seconds, respectively.
