I have been looking forward to vacation and I can either go to California or on a cruise. I have been to neither so far and don't know which to choose.

  1. Didn't mention which part of CA you planned to visit or where you were considering cruising to. Also didn't mention whether price or time was an issue and whether there would be more than one of you.

Assuming two people and  similar prices, I'd cruise.

Pros - Unpack once and visit many places. Most food and entertainment is included. The "included" food is plentiful and is generally better than what I normally eat in a restaurant. Less to plan unless you just want to. Two people can go on the same trip and have entirely different experiences.

Cons - Watch out for things that aren't included in the base price, like fuel surcharges, photos, alcohol, soft drinks, premium dining, spa, gambling, shore excursions, tips, port parking, etc. There's a constant hawking of goods and services on some lines. Time in ports is ridiculously short to see what's there.  Close quarters exist aboard, noticeable particularly when there are obnoxious fellow pax or uncontrolled children by the pool. Some routes are subject to "tropical events" (i.e. hurricanes and tropical storms) that can make travel h**l. Of course, many of these items can be issues if you take a land vacation.

Your choice depends on what you want...
