If I am interested in becoming a caretaker for the elderly in California, are there special licensing requirements such as a nursing or social worker degree that I need to look into, and is there a website that can provide more information on this? Thank you.

  1. Yes, you have to take a CNA course for one semster, which includes a clinical study in a long-term care facility (nursing home) then you take the certification test. In order to be passed to do the clinical you must be fingerprinted.

  2. I think the word you are looking for is "caregiver," and I am sure that Google or Yahoo would have information on this.  My niece is a licensed caregiver. She has a nursing degree and is employed by the County where she lives.  You might also find out more about your chosen career by calling the AMA or a nearby hospital, and any college could give you some direction.

Good luck. It is an admirable profession and is sorely needed.  More and more of the elderly are staying in their homes as long as possible and it is far, far better than being warehoused until their deaths.

  3. While busineses that take care of the elderly employ nurses and social workers they are not the caretakers. These are CNAs and LPNs.

These do require some classes and certifications.

  4. Good Grief!  I was wondering why you'd ask that HERE for goodness sakes!  *ROFLMAO*  CareGIVER, honey!  You want to be a careGIVER!

Good GRIEF!  I think I just tinkled...

  5. No you do not need a license of any kind.   In the Sacramento area or anywhere in Sacramento or Yolo county get in touch with the Yolo County Department of Employment and Social Services.

    West Sacramento, Ca 95605

  6. In Idaho if you work for a firm you are required to have certs in CPR, first aid and unlicensed medicine assistance.  These will get you the same job as a CNA or a practical nurse.  You will also have to pass a criminal background check and a substance abuse test, have a valid drivers license, insurance and then be tested for TB.  Did it for years, retired 2 years ago.
