With a significant heat wave bearing down on California and the West this week and wild fires posing potential threats to the California power grid, the California Independent System Operator Corporation is declaring a Flex Alert for Tuesday, July 8 - Thursday, July 10. Consumers are urged to reduce their energy use during the late afternoon when air conditioners drive consumption to the highest point of the day. Energy conservation tips can be found at www.FlexYourPower.org

A heat wave is in the forecast and Cal ISO has issued a statewide flex alert, asking customers to cut back on energy use.

They say it's most important between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. That's when air conditioning use is at an all-time high.

The alert is in effect for the next three days.

A Stage 1 emergency is possible Tuesday and a Stage 2 on Wednesday and Thursday.

Being in San Diego (understanding the devastation of fires), I hope we can all conserve for those affected by these fires.

  1. It's not hard to do.  But not enough people work hard enough to conserve.  At work yesterday the flex email came through.  Later coworkers descended on the office and jumped on the computers before leaving (long story short here).  After they left I turned off the computers, monitors, and overhead lights they left on.  Yeah, they were tired from being out in the field, but we all need to do our part.  It's either that or risk a brownout or blackout.

So yes, I'm abiding, for myself, my family, and my coworkers.

  2. I live in California and don't have air conditioning in my house..so not using it is not an issue.  Luckily I live in the local mountains and my house is shaded by forest.

  3. What California do you live in. I live in the one where everyone cares for themselves and the way they look and the things they have. At the first sign of heat I set the conditioner to 72, I over water the lawn to be sure it stays green, and I am pretty sure my car doesn't even get 10 miles to the gallon. Brentwood is nice today.

  4. Moveon-

You need to do what your name implies.....

    MOVE ON!

Such a typical comment from someone NOT living in CA.....

  5. Yes. Thanks for the tip.

    These fires are just devastating.

We should all give a big shout out to all these great firemen, National Guard and every volunteer !

I can't imagine a black out that would hinder the work that is being done to contain these fires.

  6. I already conserve as much as I can on a daily basis.  My thermostat is set to 86°F during the day (for pets) and 82°F in the evening when I'm home.  I also minimize my other home energy use, like using smart power strips and turning off lights and appliances when not in use.
