i went to california for vacation not to long ago and i noticed that california has call boxes every couple of miles to ensure that if something happens that there is an emergency phone nearby....i was thinking that they should put call boxes here in arizona because there is a lot of land where people can get hurt or lost and not have any way to get help...what do you think??

  1. California has a lot of people.  You can always call someone even if by mistake or by dialing a random number.  Arizona is just desert.  There is no one there!  Who you gonna call, a cactus?

  2. That's what we want to do... copy California.  All these 'great' things that California does has put them deep in the financial hole.

It is far more efficient to allow private cellular phone companies pay to put up phone towers which increase cell phone coverage (and also lengthen battery life) making the need for an emergency call box unnecessary.  In addition, even if you cannot afford to purchase a cell phone, if a friend gives you their own (non-serviced) phone that you keep charged up, most are equipped in such a way that you can still call 9-1-1 for help (but don't test it - non-emergency 911 calls will get you in hot water - call the phone company whose logo is on the phone to verify whether the old phone that you have works this way).

  3. The California call boxes were there decades ago and it was a good idea.  I'm not sure if they are continuing to add them.  Most people have a cellphone so many states just post an emergency call number every so many miles.

  4. Good observation, while I was driving through the desert, I thought the same thing. Call boxes could save lives in Arizona. Write Janet Napolitano's office, she's the governor of Arizona and ask her that question.

The problem is this: Arizona is so preoccupied with a failed economy brought on by over development, a crashed real estate market, and an onslaught of illegal aliens that they may never be able to do anything about your well-made point.

  5. Cell phones have largely made call boxes obsolete.  I live in Florida which has them on remote stretches of interstate.  They have been there since the 70's.
