Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 rumoured to hit next generation consoles, PS4 and Xbox 720 or the Wii U?
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 may not even be out yet but that has not seem to stop the gaming community from talking about the prospect of its successor, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, appearing on next generation consoles.
The speculation began after an advertisement for a job opening at Treyarch, the studio behind Call of Duty titles such as World at War and Black Ops. While finding out about new games from job advertisements is nothing new, they usually tend to be subtle,
while this particular one seems to be shouting ‘our next game will be on a next generation console!’
The advertisement reads, “Treyarch is seeking a Senior Platform Engineer for a position on the team bringing our hugely successful game to a new console.”
Now, there are a number of things that could be derived from a statement such as the one posted above. Firstly, we have to concede that the title in question may not be Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 itself, but in short it will be a successor to the game as
Treyarch’s next venture into the Call of Duty universe.
One can safely rule out the fact that the ‘popular game’ does not mean that the original Black Ops will be making its way onto the next generation of consoles either. However, one aspect of the advertisement which is the reason for some interesting speculations
is that no one can seem to pinpoint exactly what is meant by ‘new console’.
Is it talking about the Nintendo Wii U or the PlayStation Vita or maybe even hinting at a release on the PlayStation 4 and the Microsoft Xbox 720. More likely of the answers is the Wii U or the PlayStation Vita, as they are the only next generation or ‘new
consoles’ that have been officially announced by the gaming community.
This plays a major role as the Call of Duty games follow an annual release model and seeing how the next Call of Duty game, after Modern Warfare 3, is due out in November 2012, one cannot see the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox 720 being out by then.
At the same time, however, it would be odd for a game to release on only one console, as the franchise has been a multiplatform game since it began. One likely answer to that is that there may be PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and a separate Nintendo Wii version
of the game as well. Whatever the case, it seems that the only people who will know are Treyarch, Activision and the person who gets the job.
