Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Prestige Edition scrapped by Infinity Ward, no X-RC this year
Bittersweet news for many, many Call of Duty fans is the announcement that the latest iteration of the series will not come with the top tier Prestige Edition. The announcement came on Twitter, where Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling confirmed the news on the
popular social networking site with a tweet that brought about mixed emotions.
For gamers who do not know, or more likely live under rocks, the Call of Duty games tend to come out with several editions. There is the standard game, or as we like to call it ‘not a waste of money’ edition.
There is the Hardened Edition, which has a few more features in it, such as access to DLC content, a soundtrack, etc., also known as the ‘showing that I have more money than you version’.
Which by the way, Modern Warfare 3 has, so those gamers who are prone to falling for marketing gimmicks will definitely be suckered into getting this particular version. Lastly, is the Prestige Edition, or as we like to call it, ‘If you have that much money
to spend you could have opened your own company or charity’. True, the last bit was a slight exaggeration but we are sure the reader understands where we are coming from.
The Modern Warfare 2 Prestige edition came with night vision goggles and the Call of Duty: Black Ops Prestige Edition came with an explosive remote controlled car or X-RC. Luckily, though the ‘explosive’ bit was just there for dramatic effect and the RC
did not actually explode.
It seems the marketing gurus at Infinity Ward just ran out of ideas on what to put in the Prestige Edition or rather did not want to rob loyal gamers, either way it is news that has gamers both relieved and disappointed at the same time. Relieved because
they do not have to part with their life savings and disappointed because they do not have an ‘ultimate’ edition to look forward to.
For those who think we are exaggerating things when it comes to price, the Hardened Edition for Modern Warfare 3 is priced at $99.99, so one can only imagine how much a Prestige Edition would cost.
Even without a very expensive edition of the game, Modern Warfare 3 is expected to shatter records when it releases, this November. Ironically, the record it will be aiming to break is currently held by its predecessor, Call of Duty: Black Ops, which earned
$650-milllion in its first five days following release. The move may also be down to the fact that the game has a real competitor this time around with Electronic Arts’ Battlefield 3, set to release just prior to Infinity Ward’s game.
