Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 beats Battlefield 3! . . . According to research at least
Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 looks set to beat Battlefield 3 in the sales charts when both titles are released this holiday season. That is according to the latest survey which took place in United States.
According to the survey, which took a sample of 5,000 gamers who were both active and lived in North America, over a quarter of them stated that they would be purchasing Modern Warfare 3 when it is eventually released.
To be more specific and mathematics savvy, the figure recorded was 27 percent of the sample or 1350 American gamers. Amazingly though, Battlefield 3 was not even in the top five positions.
Modern Warfare 3 was followed by both Gears of War 3 and Madden NFL 12, with each title standing at 19 percent each. The figure is impressive, especially after seeing how Gears of War 3 managed to sell 3-million copies in its first week.
Next up was Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham City, which stood at 17 and 15 percent, respectively.
Just edging out Battlefield 3 is the Legend of Zelda: Skyward sword which picked up 14 percent of the votes, which means that only 12 percent of the active US gaming audience has Electronic Arts’ first person shooter on the top of their wish lists.
The news may be slightly alarming for EA, as the company put aside $50-million for marketing the title and it seems that no matter how hard they try, Activision seems to have the advantage with Modern Warfare 3.
However, it may be noted that the Call of Duty games are played more in United States as compared to the rest of the world, where the palette of gamers is slightly different.
It would be interesting to see if the results would be the same if the survey incorporated gamers from other countries as well. Having said that, it would be unfair to take away the obvious advantage Activision has with their title in United States.
The result almost seems to justify the stereotype of ‘if it has Call of Duty written on it, Americans will buy it’. Again though, that would be a stereotype as it seems Gears of War and Assassin’s Creed as just as important franchises in the region as well.
Readers must note that this is just a survey and that there is still plenty of time for things to change between now, and the release of Battlefield 3 near the end of October. The real answer will come when both games are in the market and actual sales figures
are compared.
