Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 leaked online, Activision to respond
Activision have confirmed that their upcoming modern military first-person shooter, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, has been leaked online and that the studio are well underway investigating the incident.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the latest instalment in the best selling, record breaking series from Activision and was set to be released near the middle of November.
The game has already gone Gold, which means it is in physical production, and copies are being shipped to warehouses the world over prior to its release. It turns out that one of the copies of the game have been stolen and is currently being distributed,
illegally of course, on the internet.
Activision are not happy with the illegal distribution of what is touted as being possibly the best selling game of all time and have send out their own team of investigators to ascertain how and who stole the copy of the game.
There is some good news however, as reports claim that only the second disc of the game was stolen, while the others were untouched. For those who do not know, the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will ship out on multiple discs.
The disc that was stolen is confirmed to be Disc 2 of the game, yet whether or not the game will run without the first disc is still up in the air. The fact that it is being downloaded though means that there is no shortage of people who are trying.
Activision have issued a warning for all those gamers who are considering downloading the leaked copy of the game and playing it. The publishers have announced that there will be a $5,000 fine as well as the offender who ends up being caught, receiving a
permanent ban from the online features of the game.
This is not the first time a ‘AAA’ title has been leaked before release, with Modern Warfare 3’s fiercest rival, Battlefield 3 suffering an even larger leak earlier on in the month, when the entire game was uploaded on torrent sites.
The last time anyone checked one of the torrents had 30,000 leechers, who are people downloading the file. With each copy of the game averaging around $60, that is a hefty sum to be losing out due to a premature release.
It is also not the first time that Modern Warfare 3 has suffered a leak either, with the game’s entire single player plot finding its way on to the net well before the game’s publisher would have liked.
The latest instalment in the Call of Duty series may have had a bumpy ride till release but one can be certain it will still sell in massive numbers once it is released later on this month.
