Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 not the end of a ‘trilogy’, no cliff-hangers, series to continue
Glenn Schofield, the General Manager of Sledgehammer games, has confirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will not be the last of the Modern Warfare series games.
The General Manager of one of the studios behind the development of the highly anticipated modern military first-person-shooter stated in a recent interview that the studio did not design the series as a trilogy, but instead want to take it as far as they can.
Speaking at a recent interview, Mr. Schofield responded to the ‘trilogy’ question by getting straight to the point when he said, “No.”
Luckily for everyone the man behind Sledgehammer Games elaborated and explained, “No, it’s not a trilogy. The idea was that the other two were left on cliff-hangers – doing it again felt wrong. As a matter of fact, it was like; we just escalated this thing from the first game to the third game to World War Three.”
He admitted that they did flirt with the idea of another cliff-hanger ending, however, that was soon scrapped in favour of a more complete ending to the third game, “We could leave it hanging,” he said, “or we could do an Iron Man and wrap it up”.
So it seems that the storyline for a number of the main characters from the first game, including Soap McTavish and Vladimir Makarov, will most likely be nearing their conclusion, however, with new characters such as Sandman being introduced in the latest instalment, the Modern Warfare series will still have enough to move forwards on.
Schofield guaranteed that Modern Warfare 3 would not leave any questions unanswered in the cliff-hanger sense, but he did admit that the developers did leave enough of a window for themselves to keep creating gaming experiences in the universe they had created when he teased:
“Is there a glimmer of something that says the series isn’t done, if we wanted it that way? Yeah, but not in terms of a cliff-hanger”.
There has been criticism over the length of the single player campaigns of the previous two Modern Warfare titles, with fans and critics both claiming that the experience felt rather short as compared to other first person shooter games.
In fact, the Modern Warfare 2 single player campaign was often dubbed as nothing more than a series of set-pieces broken up into slow motion action sequences, pressing buttons when prompted and running from point A to point B.
It was however, lauded for being rather cinematic at times. Activision seem to be tight lipped on the length of the single player campaign of the latest instalment as well, dodging the question whenever it has been asked.
It seems that the only way gamers will know for themselves is when they get their hands on a copy of the game.
