Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sales figures hit the $1-billion mark!
In a historic moment in the entertainment industry, Activision’s modern military first-person shooter, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has hit the $1-billion in sales revenue mark.
What makes the news even more astounding is the fact that the game managed to reach the mark in just 16 days or 384-hours! Not even we would bother finding out how many copies of the game were sold every minute.
The record sees Modern Warfare 3 go above the Hollywood blockbuster hit, Avatar, which took longer to reach the coveted and rarely achieved $1-billion mark in terms of revenue. Avatar took a day longer.
Eric Hirshberg, the Publishing CEO at Activision, always has time to thank the fans for their support yet this time he focused his praise towards the brand when he said, “Call of Duty has become that rare entertainment franchise that transcends its own genre.
Core gamers love it, as our stellar reviews show. But every year, new people are drawn into Call of Duty.”
The latter part of the statement is most definitely true as the franchise has been making and breaking its own records since Modern Warfare 2 was launched two years ago.
He did mention the fans, though more in context towards their Call of Duty Elite servie, “And while the franchise continues to set records, out fans still seem to want more, demonstrated by our record setting start on Call of Duty Elite. We are committed
to helping everyone connect, compete and improve their game.”
The record setting start refers to how the servers for Elite could not cope with the excess load which followed the game’s release. It seems not even Activision were prepared for the overwhelming response the social networking tool received.
Modern Warfare 3 managed to rake in $775-million in revenue in its first five days following release, which is another record by itself. The record incidentally belonged to another Call of Duty game as Black Ops was the holder with $650-million.
All in all, Activision probably have a pool somewhere in their office building filled with money as they swim in the fruits of their hard work.
