It seems that Activision and Bungie signed a contract in 2010 to work on four games together with the first title being released in 2013 codenamed, ‘Destiny’.
According to “a 27 page contract published in full by the LA Times”, both Activision and Bungie should be developing an action shooter game for the Xbox 360 as we speak.
The contract points out that the two studios would work on four games, with each game releasing every two years. The model would be similar to how Activision has Infinity Ward and Treyarch release a game every two years or so.
However, instead of leaving gamers to be distracted elsewhere during the year that the game will not have a sequel hitting markets, the game will launch annual DLC content in order to keep gamers interested and immersed in the universe.
The move has been received positively by many who appreciate the concept of having a new, fresh game every two years with DLC in between as opposed to the same-ish type game released every year.
Apparently, the contract also stipulates that the first game in the series will be an Xbox 360 exclusive, with both Bungie and Activision looking to start where their games’ following is the strongest.
The ensuing sequels will be released on both the PlayStation 3 and the PC as well. So in essence the game is set to keep gamers occupied for around eight years, with four games coming out over the span of those eight years, alternating between every two years with four DLC packs releasing every year a sequel to the game is not.
There was another interesting clause in the contract which stated that if the game received an average rating of 90 or higher then the developers, Bungie, would receive a $2.5-million bonus. The bonus would be the highest in the gaming industry, which has been revealed to the public.
Seeing how 2013 is a few months away and E3 is just a few weeks away, one could expect to see Destiny related info at the conference in June. Yet, one has to wonder what the developers have up their sleeve in order to keep a stagnating genre fresh.
