Question:

Calla lily as a bridesmaid bouquet?

by  |  earlier

I am incharge of making 3 bridesmaid bouqets for my friends wedding this weekend. I have never worked with flowers before and I know calla lillies are really hard to work with. Has anyone ever done a single calla for bridesmaids? If so, do you use floral wire and wrap the stem in ribbon? or does anyone have any suggestions on how to do a simple bouquet? Or pictures of single calla lily bouquets. Thanks!

  1. yes, i have heard of people using a single calla lily for the bridesmaids.... if you want them bigger (depending on the size of the brides bouquet) maybe you could have 3 lilies for the BM and 4 for the MOH and tie ribbon around them.... just a thought. :D

    Good luck.

  2. My aunt used calla lilies as her bouquest as i did as well. My aunt just used a nice thick ribbon and started from the bottomeof the stems up just wrapping around the stems to about the midway point.. You secure it with a floral pin and you are good to go. If you want to dress them up a bit maybe use crystals glued to the ribbons. The nice thing with this flower is that it doesnt die or wilt quickly.

  3. This site has a video on making a hand tied calla lily bouquet:

Here's a picture of a single calla bouquet with some greens.  You should probably wire it.  You can either wrap the stem in wire or insert a single straight piece of floral wire carefully into the stem.

You should probably soak them in water for the night and dip them lightly in wax the morning of the wedding.  Calla's hold a lot of water and have a tendancy to leak.

This site also has a lot of bouquet making information:

Good luck!  It's not as bad as it seems, I did my own flowers for my wedding and loved it.

I don't know if you've found the flowers themselves yet but you might try 2groses.com.  Their flowers are beautiful, their staff is friendly, their prices are great, and I have always had them arrive on time.

  4. I had a bouquet of 2 calla lilies for my cousin's wedding.  The flowers were just tightly tied with ribbon.  Starting at the bottom, the ribbon was crisscrossed going up the stem, so that you still see them stem and then affixed to the stem at the top with a pin.  Our stems were left long to make them more of a cradle bouquet.

  5. Do you have to do just one calla lily per bridesmaid? I would do at least five so you have something to work with. You can put them all together and tie them with a nice ribbon or fabric like this:

If you don't have the budget for that you can just do something like this, it's very simple:

Here are a few pics I found - hope this helps! Good luck!

  7. I carried long stemmed Calla Lilies at my wedding.  The stems were wrapped with ribbon.

For bridesmaids, you could use ribbon that matches their dresses and go with long-stemmed Calla Lilies. I think it would look very elegant and it would be easier for the maid of honor to hold her own bouquet and the bride's bouquet during the ceremony.

  8. i actually would do calla lillies and roses...depending on what colors you are using..
