Callicebus lugens is a small, new world monkey. It has diploid chromosome number of 16, which is the lowest found in any primate.

A.) How many chromosomes would a normal (haploid) gamete from this monkey have??

THIS WOULD BE 8 RIGHT???

B.) If one of these monkeys were found to be suffering from a tricomy, how many chromosomes would a somatic cell from this monkey have?

C.) Describe two ways a trisomic gamete could occur.

  1. A) 8. 2n=16. n=8.

    B) 17. 8 pairs of chromosomes, plus 1 additional chromosome in 1 pair= 17 chromosomes total.

    C) Mitotic error (chromosome not separating properly during metaphase or telophase) or DNA sequence error (Down's syndrome DNA codes for a trisomy in pair 21 or 7).
