My friend is a trainspotter and his birthday is coming up.

All the slam door trains from Waterloo have now gone - is there any clubs who go on outings on slam door trains?

Thanks In Advance

  1. Most heritage railways still use carriages with slam doors - anything from c.100 years old to the 1960s. 2 of these are the Watercress Line (Alton - Alresford) and the Isle of Wight Steam Railway - both easily accessible from Waterloo. Also the Bluebell and Kent & East Sussex which you can get to from Victoria.

Do a Google search or look in the railway press for main line excursion trips using steam locos for which the Mk1 or Mk2 stock is usually obligatory.

  2. Not that I am aware of. The only slam door stock in service runs from Brockenhurst to Lymington Pier (for the Isle of Wight ferries). These received a special dispensation to contiue to operate - so why not get a ticket down there for your friend?

The group concerned with preservation of southern electric stock is:- http://www.southernelectric.org.uk/segra... but they don't appear to have anything planned for the near future.

The site for details of trains to Brockenhurst/Lymington is that of South West Trains at:-http://southwesttrains.co.uk/SWTrains/
