Depends entirely on the kind of night you want. Sophisticated or studenty, casual or smart? What kind of music?

for example, I would personally avoid Leicester Square like the plague, but other people love it...

Ping Pong in soho does lovely cocktails.

Soho is quite pricey but lots of fun.

For a less expensive area, try Camden (quite a studently vibe) or Earl's Court (lots of Aussies = lots of pubs!).
