How would a car react if the clutch went bad or no longer working? How can you tell when it's the clutch that is the problem?

  1. if your clutch stops working, you won,t be going anywhere.if it,s just slipping, the engine will run off and your car won,t be going any faster.

  2. The transmission will not shift into gear when the engine is running.

  3. If the car rev's up and does not increase in speed, the the clutch is slipping. Which means it is either out of adjustment or worn out. In one case I have seen the hub torn out of the clutch plate.

If you can not shift gears with the engine running, then the clutch has either been friction welded together, or more likely the clutch is out of adjustment. The out of adjustment could also be a clutch cable or hydraulic failure.

If the pressure required to push the clutch in has increased, then the likely problem is the throw out bearing.

Other problems could be a frozen or failing pilot bearing and/or pressure plate failure. Both of these should be done when the clutch plate is replaced.

  4. Better to tell us the symptoms of your problems and ask for what is causing them.  You are giving a possible diagnosis and asking for the symptoms which are many and varied.
