ok so i'm going to university this year in like seven days in fact.

i purchased a wireless router back in the day and have been using it around my house

nowy now now ...

the way the internet connection works at the university i'm going to is tht they give you an ethernet cable which is supposed to (obviously ) be plugged directly into your computer.

if i connected this ethernet cable to my wireless router, would i get wireless internet in my room? why or why not?

  1. yes.

you have an internet connection... so connecting your router to that connection enables your wireless network.. or hardwire network...

its just access.. to the net...

  2. yup-

just put the cable into the router and your good to go-

Is the nerd comment good or bad?

  3. It depends upon the capability of your router and what type of protocol the school is using as well as what type of equipment they are using. If the jack in your room is a DSL type connection using PPOE to your routers DSL/Cable Interface, there shouldnt be a problem. If  the signal from your school is in fact ethernet it will depend upon having the ability to configure the ethernet port on your router to pick up an IP address from the school and configure the wireless to provide its own DHCP, as what you are doing is setting up a network within a network. Most lower end routers dont have this ability. Also your school's equipment probably has the ability to block this, in order to keep people from setting up their own wireless networks (security and liability  issues) within their campus network. In short it depends upon your equipment, your ability to program it, and the schools equipment and the ability of their IT people. I am betting it is possible.

  4. Well it should work.....

But your will need to reconfig your router.
