From Aus back to the UK, what recommendations would you have...bring my own mobile and buy a local sim card ? ... use a local calling card ?... we will be in Aus for over 2 months and are looking for the most cost effective way of keeping in touch. Thanks.

  1. It's much cheaper to get a new sim card in Australia.

    Or just use skype.

  2. I was on Holiday in Australia in February - I bought a calling card which I found most economical -  as for the mobile "sim" card I cannot comment on that.

  3. My dad was just telling on the phone that there is this sim ard out now that you can get on the internet that means you can pay normal rates, and you wont be charged for people calling or txting you. Hope this helps xx

  4. Best option i think is to buy a phone card out there, they are easy to get hold of(convenience stores,7/11's) and can be very cheap if you look through them all to find the best 1.Only thing to consider is that some phone cards will require you to pay a connection fee(about 50c),and some don't but they will have higher rate per minute charge. You can pick up leaflets on each type of card so you can compare that way without buying 1.

  5. when i was working in spain for three months ,i did all my talking through the internet.

  6. I would go with vodafone and get vodafone passport, you pay 75p connection then its the same as a regular call, hope this helps, Ash.

  7. There are heaps of calling cards that you can buy from supermarkets, newsagents, tobacconists etc..that you can call the UK from a landline for less than 1cent per min.  If you will be primarily using your mobile phone to call home..then many mobile phone networks have pre-paid sim cards that give you alot more credit than you actually pay for eg:  buy a sim card for $49.00 and get $360.00 credit.

  8. Apparently there's this thing called Skype. You need an internet phone and you talk over the internet, so it doesn't cost anymore than your line rental/internet provider charges..

  9. Look into Rebtel. If you can get friends in the UK to sign up with them too, you can take advantage of calls that are free apart from the local bit of the call. They use the internet to do the international bit of the call. It's a bit complicated, but worth it!

  10. Use a calling card but you need a land line to do it. I used to call my ex in the UK all the time for $20 I got 20 hours of talk time.

    That or skype
