  1. So wait you are buying a cockatoo and gonna eat it???

  2. Rose Breasted seem to be a little quieter, and one of the most manageable of the 'too family...Though I have been around gala extensively, I have not owned one.

I own a L.S.C. 'too.. 4-5 years of age... great bird, very snuggly, great with friends n family.  Occasional screaming, but NO where near the larger 'too's.

Over all.. i think the gala is more manageable in the average home.  But i would be hard-pressed to part with my LSC.

  3. I agree with the fact that a Too is not a good first bird to own. They require A LOT of time and attention and not everyone but most people will get a bird and after the new wears off the bird gets less and less attention which leads to screaming, feather plucking, and then at times built up rage and when the person decides to grab the bird after months of being left alone they are not so tame and loving anymore. Also you can NEVER lose your temper with these birds because they will NEVER forget, and they also produce a type of feather dust, so if your sensitive to dust or are a clean freak think again, I would start out with a smaller hand tame bird, Quakers are very loving, can talk up a storm but a bit easier to care for, or other types as well, Conures are good but they to are screamers.. Please do your research then maybe visit a rescue and see all the homeless Too's..

  4. I had a sulphur crested cockatoo. These birds are wonderful, they tend to like everyone not just one person like many others. However they demand a lot of attention. They love to cuddle with you but when not getting the attention they are very loud screamers.  I also have a severe mccaw so I could not give the other bird as much attention as she wanted...I had to give it to someone that had a lot of time to spend with her. If you have the time then by all means get the sulpher creasted cockatoo but be prepared for the screaming!

  5. You did not tell us whether or not you have any past bird experience of if this is the first parrot that you will be welcoming into your home. If this is your first bird, I would recommend that you look at something other than a cockatoo....there are reasons why cockatoos are the most rehomed and abused birds, and most of the problems that the owners cite for giving up their cockatoos could have been prevented if the owner was more versed on cockatoo care.

I have a greater sulpur crested cockatoo, but I did not get her until several years into keeping birds....I had kept conures, budgies, cockatiels, and finally an Amazon before I opened my home to a 'too. Cockatoos are like the diva children of the bird world, and until you have spent time with one (preferably one who is happily adjusted in a good home) and their owner face to face you will not be able to tell if you could honestly give a cockatoo a good home. I love my 'too, but she knows how to try my patience at times, and she can never, ever be left out to play unsupervised as she WILL NOT sit on a stand. (This is true of most cockatoos). She is a picky eater, and will let you know if she feels that she hasn't had enough play time for the day. Cockatoos CANNOT be left in their cage all day. This leads to screaming, chewing their feathers or worse their skin, or even aggression issues. My cockatoo gets hours of playtime a day, much more than my other birds, who are fine to be left to play with their toys on a playstand.

Don't get me wrong, cockatoos are a joy to have and really are the cuddly velcro critters every one makes them out to be. But it is their environment and their owner's dedication to keeping them happy that will keep them that way.
