Calluke Warrior battles to a close finish at Hall Green
A greyhound race can sometimes be likened to an epic battle of sorts. Six of the sport’s best warriors engage in a fight for the elusive first-place finish, filled with twists, turns,
and even a few surprises. One dog emerges victorious and takes all the glory and honour associated with winning, while the others reel in defeat.
Such can be said of the result of the first 480m of the day at the Hall Green Greyhound Stadium in Birmingham. Calluke Warrior, the 1-2 favourite coming into this race, fought long and
hard amongst his competitors, and won the A7 race with a 30.05 second finish. He led to first, but crowded badly at the three-quarter mark. Despite that, he pulled off a close win, as the second-place dog was only a ½ length behind him.
The second-place finisher was Prodigy Iceman (9-2), whose finishing time of 30.09 gave him second place. His Boy (6-1) held an early pace from trap one, and despite some crowding at first
and three-quarters, he cracked the top three by finishing the race in 30.15. He was ¾ lengths behind Prodigy Iceman.
Hiro, one of three 10-1 long shots in this race, took fourth place in 30.19, which put him just a ½ lengths out of a top-three finish. Fellow 10-1 long shot Avonside Brofin was ¾ lengths
behind Hiro in 30.25 to lock up fifth place. Tirla, the third long shot, finished last in 30.43, which was 2¼ lengths behind the fifth position.
Swift Sadie (5-1) ran to a swift finish in the A6 race that followed. She moved very slowly away from the pack, but finished well with a time of 29.30 seconds. Second place was claimed
by Move On Girlie (2-1), who held an early place, but lost some momentum later on. She finished the race in 29.62, 4 lengths behind the winner.
Finishing in third place was Rake St Rover (5-1), who earned his position with a 29.74 finish that placed him 1½ lengths behind Move On Girlie. Avaheen Kingdom (8-1) wore number six in
this race, but finished fourth in 29.82, which was a single length behind third place.
Pre-race favourite Watch That Belle (6-4) watched as four dogs passed her, as she placed fifth. She was 1 length behind Avaheen Kingdom in 29.90 to take fifth place. It was disappointing
finish for the heavily-favoured contender. Despite a clear run, Playboy Cherry (6-1) finished in sixth place with a time of 29.94. He was just a ½ length out of the number five spot.
Calluke Warrior battled well today, and he’ll have a chance to earn another win on Friday 17 September when the races resume at Hall Green Greyhound Stadium. The first race of the night
gets underway at 19:35.
