Callum Macaulay reclaims his European Tour card through the Qualifying School
Callum Macaulay made it to the European Tour for the second time in his career, by finishing tied for the 20th position at the European Tour’s Final Qualifying Stage, on Thursday, November 29, 2012.
In 2009, he played his rookie season on the European Tour, after qualifying through the Q-School. However, he was unable to retain his card, following his 133rd-place finish in the European Tour’s money list.
As a result, he returned to the Challenge Tour and spent three years on the tier-two European circuit.
Last season, he finished 52nd in the Challenge Tour Rankings, which earned him a place in the European Tour’s Qualifying School.
He marked a slow start to his campaign at the Catalunya Golf Resort, as he carded a one-over par 71 in the opening round.
He then made a strong comeback by posting rounds of one-under par and four-under par in the second and the third round, respectively.
After recording two-over par and three-under par scores in the fourth and the fifth round, respectively, he entered the final round sharing the 22nd position.
Therefore, he really needed to remain consistent, in a bid to stay among the top-25 players on the leaderboard.
The Scot parred each of the first 11 holes that he played on day six, prior to recording two birdies against the same number of bogeys on the next five holes.
On the 17th green, he drained an amazing 15-foot par putt, to remain in contention for a top-25 position in the tournament.
The very next hole witnessed him rolling the ball into the hole for a birdie, his third of the day.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he expressed his pleasure in making a return to the European Tour in style.
“My emotion just got the better of me then,” he said. “When I saw it straighten up I thought, ‘this is it’. I'm just delighted to be back playing on The European Tour again”.
He added, “To be honest, there were times in the last two years when I thought I would never be back there again and my game was going backwards, but I cannot wait to get back”.
