Question:

Calves hurt! Should I still run?

So I usually run for 35 minutes 5-6 times a week. Two days ago I decided to do some strength training and I worked my calf muscles. When I woke up the next day, my calf muscles were sooooo sore! So I decided to skip running that day. But they are also hurting this morning too! So I don't know if I should skip running today too or if I should suck up the pain and run? I am just worried that if I run today with the pain, the pain will then continue for more days. What should I do?

  1. dont run or else it'll hurt even more.

  2. Don't run for as long as it takes. Next time you work on your calf muscles work them a little less hard. All pain and no gain is completely wrong. The more damage you do to your muscle, the less effective working out is.

The day you are no longer sore in your calves is the day you should take back up running again. But your body is screaming at you right now, you should listen. It says, i hurt, please don't work me at this moment while i am trying to heal myself.

When your muscles are sore it's much easier to do true damage. You don't want your aching muscles to tear or pull for a run... you could be down months instead of days.

  3. Whenever I strength train my calfs they hurt for 2 days max.  Any longer and I would say that you pulled a muscle, in which case don't run until the soreness goes away.

  4. Don't run and give your calves a chance to heal.  You might want to take some magnesium supplements to help with the pains in your calves.  Most runners find that they are low on magnesium.
