Calvin Borel makes his move round the rail but this time it was round the lane, court hearing on 24th August
Just this Saturday night Borel was arrested by the Indiana State police that was patrolling that night. According to them Borel had gone for a potentially dangerous turn on the lane and upon examining it was found that his blood alcohol level was just slightly
above Indiana’s legal limit by 0.08.
Driving drunk was the charge against him because of which his driver’s license also has been suspended for 180 days. He was arrested when he was pulling into the motel’s parking in his 2008 Cadiallac where he was staying. As been reported he was out bowling
with his fellow jockeys following his victory at Ellis Park.
He was released the next morning on $100 bond from the Vanderburgh County Jail in Evansville, Kentucky and was scheduled to be presented for court hearing on Monday. He received a mixed reaction from his fans.
The majority was sympathetic especially due to the victory speech on board the 50 to 1 long shot in 2009 as he captured the hearts of many by being emotional and elated however there are those too who support the stance that Calvin should be responsible
to justify whatever went wrong.
"Certain level of accountability that you are going to be viewed in a different way because of the fame associated with what you do," said Louisville resident James Wilson. "You gotta take the good and the bad."
Calvin H. Borel is a 44-year old American jockey in thoroughbred horse racing and has also claimed the prestigious 2007, 2009 and 2010 Kentucky derby which in itself is a record. In 2009 Derby his winning margin was an amazing 6 ¾ lengths which is the greatest
in the Derby history since assault won by 8 lengths in 1946.
He stands to be the outstanding jockey who won the combo derby one after the other which was before this achieved in 1993 and is the seventh jockey overall to successfully accomplish this feat in the same year.
He is also known to be the first jockey for winning the first two jewels of the Triple Crown on different mounts. This was when he won on board Rachel Alexander in 2009 at the Preakness Stakes. As he stays near the rail almost always, he has been nicknamed
B “rail”.
Over an extensive career of 25-years, Calvin has been able to maintain repute for strong work ethic. His riding career took off in June, 2006 and his first significant career win was the Kentucky Derby in 2007.
The plot is still thin but it can thicken for sure if Calvin is found guilty of the Class A misdemeanor as the jockeys are regularly tested for blood alcohol limit in Kentucky. Not that he went out of the way outrageously but of course he will need to be
more vigilant in the future.
