Calvin Che stuns Samuel Ricketts to surge into semi-final of XXI Pan Am Junior Championships
Canada’s Calvin Che surprised everyone by reaching into Boy’s Singles U17 semi-final after putting up stunning performance in quarter-final battle when he overpowered his higher ranked rival Samuel Ricketts of Jamaica at the XXI Pan Am Junior Championships

The impressive Calvin, who is un-seeded shuttler in the main draw of the event, played to his maximum potential and remained successful in winning the battle against Ricketts who was the top seed in the tournament.
The lower ranked Canadian shuttler showed his impressive class by playing at his best speed and stunned his Jamaican rival in a sensational three-set fight with a tight margin on score board.
The higher ranked Ricketts, who was the heavy favourite to grab victory in this match, remained unlucky in the ending points of the match and unexpectedly lost to his un-seeded opponent in rubber games in 41 minutes.
In the opening set, the Canadian shuttler played impressive badminton and remained in wonderful control of rallies until the mid-game interval when he was ahead on the score board at 11-8.
After the break, Ricketts paced up the rallies by taking the bird early from all areas aiming to create pressure on his local opponent.
On the other hand, Calvin failed to maintain his upper hand over his opponent at the ending points and lost the set with a close score of 19-21.
In the second game, Calvin remained dominant throughout the opening half and took an 11-8 lead until the one-minute break.
After the interval, the Canadian played continued showing his polished skills on court and he remained successful in winning the set this time with a crushing margin of 21-11.
In the decider, it was again the Canadian who played controlled badminton in opening half and took a reasonable lead of 11-8 until the interval.
After the break, Ricketts increased his speed and ended up the difference while playing positive badminton.
Both men progressed equally until 20-20 when Calvin played impressive shots and managed to take the ending points to finish off the set with a close score of 22-20.
The in-form Calvin won this spectacular three-set fight in 41 minutes with a thrilling 19-21, 21-11 and 22-20 margin on the board.
