Calzaghe vs Jones or Pavlik?

Yes Jones hasnt beaten a top fighter in years and yes he did beat an uninspired Trinidad, but if you watched that fight you had to think that Roy didnt look half bad. After watching Joel beat Hopkins in a split decision, I like Jones chances even more. I think it would be very interesting to see the two match up but some would say the same for Pavlik as well and rightfully so. So I ask, who you rather see Calzaghe fight next and why?

...... and PLEASE, I dont want to hear money being any reason for him to fight either fighter!

  1. I would prefer him to fight Kelly Pavlik because beating a young and determined fighter at his peak like Pavlik would really prove Calzaghe's worth and it would really show us if he is as good as his 45-0 record.  Not to mention, the clash of styles would probably make for a real good fight- Pavlik is the power puncher who throws a lot of punches, and Calzaghe is the faster puncher who also throws a lot of punches.  BUT I know that won't happen because HBO already has a November 15 Pay Per View date for a Jones fight, they just need to work out the details.  The Roy Jones, Jr. fight is just a much bigger fight, and a much bigger event all around.  And honestly, I am actually okay with seeing Calzaghe fight Roy because I would like to see Roy get that one last shot at becoming champ against a top opponent instead of fighting guys like Prince Badi Ajamu, Anthony Hanshaw, or an overweight Felix Trindad.  And I agree- Roy did look good in beating Trinidad, but Tito was fighting at 170 pounds and could barely even make that weight.  Roy's problem nowadays is that he is simply not as active in his fights anymore due to his age as well as him being gun shy (afraid of being KO'd again).  Even in the Trinidad fight, it took him until the 4th round to actually get going and a volume puncher like Calzaghe would take advantage of Roy's inactivity throughout the bout.  Hopkins was able to make it a close fight because he was able to "stink it out" by holding and then trying to counter with the straight right, and Bernard has more left than Jones does, even though B-Hop is 43 and Roy is 39 because Bernard was able to preserve himself more because he was such a defensive fighter.  Anyone as talented as Roy Jones was is always going to have a chance, but at this stage of his career, I really can't see him beating Joe Calzaghe, and Jones is not as defensive as Hopkins and he does not hold nearly as much, so that would give Calzaghe more opportunitites to outwork Jones with his volume punching.  At the end of the night, I think it will be a pretty good fight and Jones will win some rounds, but Calzaghe will ultimately win a unanimous decision.

  2. For recognition for calzaghe id say pavlick, he's a young strong fighter but calzaghe is just special so this would bea  good fight. However jones and calzgahe an legends to many and both coming to the end of their carrees this could be a cc fight that goes down in history if its an entertaining fight. So reckon jone calzaghe if he has 1 more fight. If not pavlick then if a win jones for the last fight.

  3. I'd much rather see Joe fight Pavlik. Kelly's in his prime, and given that Joe was troubled by Hopkins' right hands, I think Pavlik would have many opportunities to touch Joe with his own right - which is better, and longer than Hopkins'. The flip side of the coin is that Pavlik hasn't been in with someone as naturally big, fast, or talented as Calzaghe. I think it's a helluva fight, and I'd go with Calzaghe by UD in a close one.

Let Jones fight Hopkins in their long-awaited rematch. (I'd pick Hopkins to maul and possibly stop Roy).

Dawson should rematch Glen Johnson - I had Glen winning their first bout. He deserves the rematch.

  4. i think jones will fight calzaghe cuz jones wants that paper ya dig and wants to still fight top names

  5. he needs to fight a prime fighter not another guy whos past his prime. pavlik would fight him for 12 rounds

  6. Calzaghe vs Jones  would be a better match roy would beat him. ud

  7. id say jones jr would his next opponent because the more i hate to say but ithink pavlik has no chance on fighting calzaghe because he's just been a champion for a year and a half and he needs more experience before he faces a legend or high profiled fighter idont  think its gonna happen bcuz bob arum's plans for pavlik are just as the same paqcuiao and cotto to build his popularity, reputation and his status as being known as  a highprofiled superstar such as rjj and calzaghe and as of now pavlik is way  far from their league

  8. I would like to see him fight Chad Dawson, Roy Jones looked good against Trinidad but it was really a mismatch, Trinidad didn't even look like himself, and Jones is used to fighting much heavier guys, Pavlik is doing great in the middle ranks but he has to completely clear that division (like Haye did at Cruiser weight) before moving up, Dawson is currently the best light heavy weight out there and he is in his prime, Pavlik is also in his prime but I don't think Pavlik has any intention of moving up just yet, Dawson would give Calzaghe a good fight and I think it would also be quite entertaining for boxing fans and that would seal Calzaghe's legacy for good, although a fight with Pavlik would also be very interesting as well, Jones is not the lightning fast boxer he once was, so i don t wanna see that fight.

  9. Calzaghe should fight Jones as he would go to the uk and fight and he is a lot older than Pavlik, Calzaghe has a legitament shot at extending his legacy. If he were to fight Pavlik he would be taking a huge gamble on ending his caree by being knocked out by one of Pavlik's rights which would be a lot harder than the one that put him down by hopkins in the very first round.

  10. It would be an interesting match

    1- Roy vs Pavlik- ----

2- Calzaghe vs winner from 1.

  11. Pavlik.

Anytime an overhyped foreign fighter gets "Hattonized", it's a good thing.  And that's what would happen to Calz if he had the bottle to get into the ring with Pavlik.  I think Calz would beat Jones for the simple reason of age has caught up to Roy.

Jones-Calz would be close, but Pavlik-Calz would resemble a torture scene.

    ***additional***

C3PO, that's it, you are off my Christmas card list!

  12. Pavlik because Jones is well past it and wouldn't be a challenge for Joe, just a big payday.  I want to see Joe challenged in his last fight, just to see if he can still do it against someone in his prime.  Calzaghe would beat Pavlik.  Pavlik would be just like every other American - good for a while, until he comes up against a fighter who will whip him good, then he will lose interest and credibility.

Elmer - you are a t**t! Get a life you moron.

  13. Kacie - I would rather look at you in person that watch any of those old guys fight.

  14. I'd like to see him fight Pavlik. Aside from the fact that Pavlik is a fighter I like to watch, I think Pavlik would give Calzaghe a run for his money because I think he could weather Calzaghe's slaps (I'd say "punches," but they aren't really punches), and rock Calzaghe pretty hard because Calzaghe has no form whatsoever. Admittedly, I haven't seen much of Calzaghe, but he got rocked by Hopkins a few times so I'd say his chin is suspect.

Calzaghe also has to beat a young fighter who is in their prime stateside if he wants to prove to me that he is as good as his record indicates. Beating Hopkins didn't prove a thing. One time my brother was talking about this kid in his high school who was a senior that liked fighting freshmen. My bro pointed out that "If he wins, so what? You beat up a freshman! You lose, woah, you lost to a freshman!" Same concept with beating Hopkins... Calzaghe won and showed that he can barely get past a 43 year old who is way past his prime and is busy finding ways to not convincingly lose. A Roy Jones Jr fight would have the same effect; Calzaghe wins, he beat a great that is past his prime, he loses and he proves that he's a loser. Therefore, fighting Pavlik would go the farthest in proving that he is a boxing great because Pavlik is still young. Pavlik is also a good choice because he is lineally better than Hopkins was at the tail end of his prime.

Of course, the Roy Jones Jr fight is GOING to happen.... there's just more money in it. It's sad but true that great fighters will usually take the money fights at the end of their career to milk their names for all their worth before retiring and Calzaghe has said he plans on retiring soon.
