Cam Newton involved in payment scandal
Reports have surfaced indicating that Auburn Tigers quarterback Cam Newton asked for money from universities when he was being recruited out of junior college.
Two sources have reported to ESPN that Newton and his father Cecil Newton, asked Mississippi State for money during the recruiting process and that the youngster declined an offer from the university because of the lack of payment.
According to one of the sources, Cam Newton called the recruiters at Mississippi State and told them that he would not be able to come to their school because the money he was receiving to play at Auburn was too much to pass up.
Mississippi compliance officials have passed along their information to the NCAA and Southeastern Conference compliance officials, in the hopes that the college governing body will begin an investigation.
Cecil Newton refused to speak at length about the issue, but did tell FoxSports.com that the ongoing scandal was a ‘witch hunt’.
"I’ve answered what I need to answer," Cecil Newton told FoxSports.com. "If they’re out there, go with it and make the decision or determination based on whatever you’ve got to say...They can continue doing whatever they’re doing sir. I’m just in
support of my son."
Cam Newton is having a tremendous season on the field. He is considered the heavy favourite to take home the Heisman Trophy at the end of the year and there are concerns that the possibility of an investigation may rattle the youngster.
"I’m not going to entertain something that took place not three months, not six months, not a year, but two years ago," Newton told ESPN.
"I’m not going to sit up here and say anything about it, whether I did or did not do it, because I don’t want to beat a dead horse talking about it. It’s not going to affect me [in] any way, shape or fashion."
Auburn is currently unbeaten and sits at the top of the SEC West.
