Cam Ward and the Carolina Hurricanes shut out Boston Bruins
The Carolina Hurricanes bested the Boston Bruins at home Friday, 26 November, 2010. Fresh off the birth of his son, Cam Ward stopped all 37 shots and the Hurricanes power-play was perfect as the Hurricanes
won the thanksgiving matchup by a score of 3-0.
Earning the game’s first star, Ward was perfect, turning away the Bruins every time, including a furious attempted rally by the Bruins in the third period, where they sent 16 shots in Ward’s direction.
Ward also got some help from Bruins forward Nathan Horton who had two perfect scoring chances that hit the post in the first.
Defenceman Joe Corvo averted disaster when he intercepted a pass from Bruin’s forward Daniel Paille. The interception broke up a shorthanded 3-on-1 break for the Bruins. Corvo took the puck and chipped
it up to Tuomo Ruutu who carried it into the zone and passed it to a wide open Jeff Skinner. The rookie wasted no time and buried the puck with a snap shot to put the Canes up 1-0 with just 15.8 seconds left in the first period.
The Hurricanes continued to make the Bruins pay for their lack of discipline, as Ruutu scored the second goal on a power play, midway through the second. Then on a delayed penalty, Bruins rookie Tyler
Seguin looked to have an empty net, but Ward made it across the crease just in time to deny the young prospect.
Eric Staal and Jussi Jokinen sealed the deal half-way through the third when on yet another power play, Staal made a blind back hand pass while falling to the ice. The pass found its way to Jokinen who
wristed it past Thomas for the teams third and final goal.
The Bruins fans booed their team off the ice after such a poor performance. Cam Ward was 1-6-0 in his last seven career starts against the Bruins. Tim Thomas, the league leader in save percentage finished
(0.951) finished the game with a dismal 0.875, his worst start of the season.
Heading into this afternoon’s game, the Bruins had the best penalty-killing unit in the league, while the Hurricanes sat in 29th on the man advantage. The Hurricanes power play ran at 100 per cent.
With the loss, the Bruins lose the statistical edge they had over the Montreal Canadiens with games played. They find themselves three points behind the division leading Canadiens with only one game in
hand.
The Hurricanes now find themselves only one point out of a playoff spot with 22 points. The Atlanta Thrashers sit in eighth seed with 23 points in an equal number of games played.
