Cam Ward gets career first goal to life Carolina Hurricanes over New Jersey Devils 4-2 -NHL Update
It was a bizarre night for the New Jersey Devils who faced a loss against Carolina after their goalie, Cam Ward, made his first career goal and last of the night to lift the Hurricanes to victory, 4-2, on Monday night, December 26, 2011, at the RBC Center
in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States.
Ward’s goal came off an attempt to clear the puck which slide right into the Devils empty net in the final seconds of game play in the third period after New Jersey was attempting at making a comeback with two straight goals.
"It would have been a lot cooler if I had shot the puck or did something like that", Ward said with a smile.
Brandon Sutter scored his seventh of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season when the Hurricanes were shorthanded as Tuomo Ruutu was booked at the midway mark for tripping with a minor penalty.
Ruutu came out strong in the second period and added his 13th of the season nearly midway through the second period while Anthony Stewart secured the match with less than three minutes remaining on a slap shot from the right end.
"What I really like in the last six, seven games is that we're a little bit more consistent", new Carolina coach, Kirk Muller, said. "We're not beating ourselves, for the most part, and the points that we have given away are things that we've done. So the
last couple games, we've done a better job of that and we've been doing a lot of good things”.
New Jersey attempted a comeback in the last minutes of the third period as David Clarkson finally put the Devils on the scoreboard at the 12:38 mark and Adam Henrique put the visitors within reach of the score by one nearly five minutes later, but Cam Ward’s
first of his career ended their momentum right there with 30 seconds left to go.
Carolina is on their way to grabbing a third straight victory when they face off against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday while the Devils will be hosting Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday.
