Cambina expected to face intense competition at Del Mar Oaks
Cambina will soon be up front at Del Mar Oaks, particularly against Nereid and Summer Soiree, as they can pose the most threat. Cambina’s record already includes four stake victories during this year which includes the Grade 2 Providencia Stakes at Santa
Anita in April and the Grade 1 American Oaks at Hollywood Park last month.
She also stood third at two stakes races at Hollywood Park in the spring, performing well in both the races.
She managed to rectify the problem in the stretch to win the American Oaks in a sheer competition with Nereid.
Cambina’s determination has impressed Jeff Bonde this year and he is also very speculative of Cambina’s chances at winning her 5th career stake and taking away $250,000.
“I think I’ve got the best horse,” Bonde said. “When she’s had a chance to run, she’s beaten them all. She’s on top of her game.”
In order to win in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks, a 1 1/8-mile turf race for 3-year-old fillies, it is very important for Cambina to be at her best.
The race has been contested by thirteen but for safety reasons it would be started off by ten horses.
The main body of the ten fillies comprises of those who have won or placed in graded stakes which obviously puts these ten at advantage as compared to the other three who have not achieved the prior status.
Till yet Nereid has lost only one out of his four career starts, she was beaten by grade 1 winner Zaru in her career debut last November however since then she is unbeaten by switch of turf this season.
She is being trained by John Shirreffs and has made her stakes debut in the 1 1/4-mile American Oaks on July 16, setting a rhythm throughout before for a tantalizing victory with the fast to the lead, Cambia.
That makes up one tough competition for Cambia and the other one is Summer Soiree, daughter of War Front who is an extremely versatile, recording prominent wins on the track.
She has been noted for registering a 101 BRIS Speed rating for the impressive performance in her turf debut last time.
She has won Barry Irwin’s Team Valor International and the Kentucky Oaks. The Boiling springs proved to be Summer Soiree’s shortest margin for winning her three titles in 2011.
This race no doubt tends to be the brightest high light for this weekend as it is the prestigious Del Mar Oaks. It seems to be a very promising event which all the connections and fans are awaiting for eagerly.
It would also put to rest the question of Cambina coming full strength to counter the competition because whoever will win, it would add to the titles won and to career earnings. This race will also decide for the stakes in which the horses will be able
to participate in the future.
