Cambridge MCCU v Essex – Marylebone Cricket Club University Matches - Day 1 Recap
The Marylebone Cricket Club University matches took off on the 31st of March, 2012, where MCCU teams will be facing off against County sides. The first 3-day match of the competition began yesterday, March 31, 2012, between the Essex County and the Cambridge Marylebone Cricket Club University side, at Cambridge.
Former English International player, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013’s Under-19 team. From Cambridge MCCU, youngsters Peter Turnbull and Robert Woolley took the new ball.
The Westley-Godleman duo put up a 62-run partnership to kick off the Essex innings, however, Tom Westley had to depart first, after spending over an hour at the crease and scoring 30 runs. First change bowler, 18-year-old Matt Salisbury claimed his scalp, trapping him leg-before-wicket in the 17th over.
Westley was replaced by 22-year-old http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jaik-Mickleburgh-c1627, who would have liked to score more than the 9 runs he did, courtesy a catch by Paul Best, off the bowling of Turnbull. Mickleburgh’s departure left the side on 77-2 in the 28th over.
Mark Pettini came in next to accompany opener Godleman, but could not support him much as he too was claimed by Turnball, who had Pettini edge one back to the keeper, who pouched it safely to send him packing after adding only 6 runs to the total. Right-handed batsman, Adam Wheater was on the crease next, only to depart for a duck as Dean Bell pouched another, this time off Robert Woolley.
Wheater’s dismissal on a duck left the Essex side at 91-4 in the 34th over, where came http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Greg-Smith-c1508, the experienced, 28-year-old Derbyshire Right-handed batsman. Smith, alongside Godleman, forged a 50-run partnership to take Essex’s score to 141 by the 44th over. Godleman was the one to go, bowled out by Salisbury, after spending just over 3 hours on the wicket for his 57-run knock, which included 8 fours and 1 six.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-Napier-c1505 was up next, and his century, coupled with the skipper’s hundred, took the total above the 500-run mark, with the side declaring their innings on 506/6.
Turnball and Salisbury bagged 2 wickets each, while Woolley and Poysden claimed one wicket a piece.
The Cambridge MCCU side was up to bat next and sent http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Charl-Willoughby-c1231. The openers would have been expected to provide a solid start against Essex’s first innings score of 506, but Bell was the first to fall, after facing just 17 balls and scoring 10 runs, as Masters trapped him leg-before-wicket.
Bell’s departure had left the Cambridge MCCU at 25-1, and the new man on the crease, Josh Poysden could score only one run before the day was called off with the side at 26-1 – still trailing by a handsome margin.
