Cambridge MCCU v http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783 – Marylebone Cricket Club University Matches - Day 2 Recap
The 2nd day of the Marylebone Cricket Club University match between the Essex County and the Cambridge MCCU ended with the Essex side having a 400-run lead and 7 wickets in hand. The 3-day match began on the 31st of March, 2012, at
Cambridge, as part of the competition which will see MCCU teams going against English County sides.
After winning the toss on day one, Essex skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Billy-Godleman-c1164 opened the innings for their side. The first five Essex batsmen were disappointing bar Godleman, who played a consolidating role and stayed
at the crease for a good 3 hours. However, later knocks by the experienced http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-Napier-c1505 (100) put the side in a dominant position, and they declared the innings on 506 runs.
From Cambridge’s side, youngsters Peter Turnbull and Matt Salisbury were the most devastating, bagging 2 wickets each, while Robert Woolley and and Josh Poysden settled for a single scalp a piece.
Coming in to bat, the Cambridge MCCU skipper Woolley sent http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dean-c53369 Bell to start off the innings, but Bell couldn’t last the day and departed, leaving Ackland to be accompanied by Poysden, as the two closed the first day on 26-1.
The 2nd day in Cambridge’s run chase saw them lose Ackland and Poysden early on and it was James Johnson who provided some stability with his 128-ball 61. The other end saw frequent dismissals, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Akbar-Shahzaman-Ansari-c42525
and Robert Woolley departed on ducks. Coming down the order, it was Paul Best, Tom Elliott and Peter Turnbull who supported the innings with 36, 30 and 20 runs respectively, to take the total to 219 all-out after 62.4 overs.
33-year-old veteran, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/David-Masters-c1333 was the main man behind Cambridge MCCU’s capitulation, as he bagged 6 wickets (Ackland, Bell, Johnson, Park, Ansari and Best), in his 19 overs, bowling 5 maidens and conceding only 52 runs at an economy rate of 2.73. Masters
was lent support by Graham Napier, who contributed with 3 scalps in his 16 overs.
The Essex side started their second innings on the same day, sending in the same pair (Godleman and Westley) to open the innings. However, Westley was the first to depart this time as well, trapped leg-before-wicket by Turnbull, after facing just 5 deliveries
for his 1 run.
Mickleburgh, who had scored 9 runs in his previous outing, was able to go for 20 this time, before Salisbury bowled him out, making room for Mark Pettini to step onto the crease. Mark and Godleman were then able to take the score to 93, before the former
was sent back to the pavilion by Paul Best.
Adam Wheater than joined the opener to see the day through, and the duo successfully managed to do that, ending with a total of 113 runs on the board by the day’s end, with Godleman on 68 and Wheater on 10.
